JEANNE barret

Graphical universe  around Jeanne Barret's life.

Jeanne Barret was the first woman to circumnavigate the world with the Bougainville's expedition in 1767.

During this time a royal decret prohibits all women to get on board. So, she disguised as a man and said that she was the manservant of Philibert de Commerson, the botanist of the expedition. In fact, she was his mistress.

They discovered insects and plants like bougainvillea and hydrangea.

At the end of the expedition Jeanne Barret didn’t' receive any recognition for her work because she was a woman. Yet, with her knowledges of herbwoman she really enhanced the theorist studies of Philibert de Commerson.

This drawing uses the character's life. On a maritime horizon a cartography is drawn with clear lines of topographical layers and in the bed of a river the profile of this woman. Some pink islands complete the overall picture, representing the face, more known, of Philibert Commerson, behind which the work of Jeanne Barret is forever hidden.
